My Personal Geek offers advice to avoid potential scams

July 25, 2018 By helpdesk1 Leave a Comment

Recently My Personal Geek received a call from an 800 number that left the following message on our voicemail: “That subscription of your Microsoft Windows has expired today. All Microsoft services have stopped working call back on 866-662-6027 three to reactivate your subscription.”

This is totally a scam.  There are several cues here.

Microsoft does not call people up.
Windows is not a subscription and does not expire.
The English is imporper.
There are several variants of this scam.

Microsoft calling that your computer has become infected
Google calling that there is a problem with your account
The iRS calling that you owe money and must call immediately
These calls often scare people, and even people who are computer savy sometimes fall for them.

If you get a call that seems like it is coming from one of these organizations, do not fall for it. The result of responding to these can result in you buying unneeded software, having malware installed on your computer, or in the worst case, having your idenity stolen.

Remember, if in question, you can always call My Personal Geek for advice.
